Share the Passion: Gifts of Art
A Keen Eye: Early Donors
May 5 - June 25, 2017
The Judith & Norman Alix Art Gallery presents the second exhibition in its Share the Passion: Gifts of Art series. A Keen Eye: Early Donors opens to the public on First Friday, May 5. The exhibition celebrates the initial group of men and women who ignited the legacy of the gallery's permanent collection in the early 1920s.
The exhibition features donations from the Sarnia Women's Conservation Art Association, Industries Art Fund, and private donating families such as Gurd, Biehn, Cowen, and Pokorny.
The pieces in the exhibition have been specially selected to highlight those donations that have included preliminary drawings, or a grouping of works, which allows the viewer to understand the development of an artist's style. Patrons are invited to follow York Wilson into abstraction, bear witness to the entire aquatint etching process of David Blackwood, and enjoy the charming pink chalk sketch work visible under the sheer watercolour application of an A.J. Casson painting.
The exhibition offers the chance to reconnect with some beloved Group of Seven paintings by A.Y Jackson, Lawren Harris, and Arthur Lismer, and also spotlights a never before exhibited oil painting by famed Group of Seven member A.J. Casson - donated and dedicated in memory of Dr. J. Telford Biehn, by his daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Arthur Craig.
Join us on May First Friday for the public opening of this terrific exhibition!
