A video installation by Phil Baljeu inserted amongst paintings from the Judith & Norman Alix Art Gallery's permanent collection. In Echoes of Place Baljeu takes videos of locations from around his hometown of Sarnia, Ontario, and turns them into alien sites.
The images look as if they were captured on ancient security camera systems, often losing stability and producing glitches which interrupt the video feed. Taking aesthetic inspiration from science fiction films, particularly those with bleak landscapes, Baljeu uses handmade analog electronics to process the location footage many times over to create a complex and organic final output. Using the process of feedback (pointing a camera at a screen that is displaying the cameras output) feeds the image back in a loop creating echoes of the image, similar to standing in a mirrored room and seeing echoes of yourself.
Surrounding Baljeu's video installation is a selection of works from the permanent collection that inspire a sense of place. Paintings include work by members of the Group of Seven, Painters Eleven, Stephen Andrews, Roland Fenwick amongst other local, regional and national artists.
