“I want my work to become a movement toward connectivity to our environment and to each other, to emote in a way similar to experiencing the beauty of nature in person, to inspire its audience to ask questions, ponder the mysteries and delve deeply into the humanity and fragility that is life.” - Siobhán Humston
Since leaving her warehouse studio in Vancouver a dozen years ago, artist Siobhán Humston has searched for ways to interlace elements of her existing art practice to include sculpture and installation. To incorporate fibre arts techniques learned from her mother and woodworking skills as taught to her by her father. Through ongoing research and the development of a methodology that she calls ‘Day-to-Day Aesthetics,’ she creates series of artworks that present her creative explorations in tandem with her more philosophical queries.
The Day-to-Day Aesthetics methodology involves a daily creative practice, and a focus on the importance and meaning of the materials used in making works of art while maintaining earth friendly, sustainable ethos. By developing an acute awareness, sensitivity to and respect for her ever-changing surroundings, the work evolves as a direct response to both where her studio is located and what (re)usable materials she discovers. In the Garden of Exquisite Unknown is inspired by her current surroundings of Lake Huron, Plympton-Wyoming and Lambton County.
Siobhán Humston is an interdisciplinary artist. She received her Bachelor of Fine Art at Crawford College of Art & Design (Cork, Ireland), and Master of Fine Art, Art & Environment at Falmouth University (Cornwall, UK). Her artwork has been exhibited in over seventy solo and group exhibitions, she is the recipient of a Pollock Krasner Foundation fellowship, BC and Ontario Arts Council grants and has been Artist in Residence at Marlborough College, England; Earthskin, New Zealand; Cultureland, The Netherlands; Sitka Center for Art & Ecology in Oregon; Haida Gwaii Museum; Ranger Station Art Gallery, BC; Byrdcliffe, New York and others.
