Siphonophora is an immersive installation responding to the Anthropocene. Moving as though part of a single collective body, the installation is reminiscent of a colonial bioluminescent marine animal known individually as zooids, and as siphonophore or pyrosomes when joined. The material choice of sculpted plastic and refuse reference another phenomena found in the ocean: the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Both are culminations of small bodies that when bound together create an imposing mass. The installation morphs between man-made and organic forms before revealing itself as a looming self-portrait of habitual consumption.
Pyrosomes and siphonophore react with bioluminescence when agitated. Visitors can interact with and observe this by facing towards the centre of the installation and making loud sound.
Jenn E Norton uses time-based media to create immersive, experiential installations that reframe familiar objects, landscapes, and activities as fantastical, dreamlike occurrences. Her installation work explores the blurring boundaries of virtual and physical realms. Norton resides in Guelph and is currently pursuing a PhD at York University.
