Another High Profile Exhibit Opens at JNAAG

“Witness: Canadian Art of the First World War”, featuring the work of Group of Seven Artists A.Y. Jackson and Frederick Varley will be on display from Friday, September 1, 2017 until January 7, 2018 at the Judith & Norman Alix Art Gallery in downtown Sarnia.

Gallery Curator Lisa Daniels says it also features never-before-seen paintings from artist-soldiers and commissioned wartime artists.

“A lot of the art that will be shown is by soldier artists,” Daniels says. “These were soldiers, perhaps architects, who would do drawings while in prisoner of war camps and that type of thing. It’s really giving insight into some of the behind the scenes experiences of our Canadian soldiers.”

More than 21,000 people visited Masterworks from the Beaverbrook Art Gallery and ironically, it was Lord Beaverbrook who started the Museum’s War Art Collection with many of his collections.

Admission to the “Witness” exhibit will be free to the public, beginning at 6pm Friday, September 1
