Celebrating Neville Clarke

Neville Clark, our long-time volunteer passed away on May 16th. Neville Clarke was a dedicated docent and an inspiration to us all. He was always positive and enthusiastic and loved greeting gallery patrons to share his zest for art and life.

CLARKE, Neville Allan Thomas - On May 16, 2018, at the wonderful age of 98, Neville Allan Thomas Clarke passed away. Loved and missed by daughters Yvonne Clarke and Hilary Purvis, and by son-in-law Barry. Preceded in death by his wife Emily, brothers Hector, Athel, and Robert and sister Hazel. He was known as Neville to his newer friends, and Tom, to his older friends. Neville was born in Allahabad, India on August 11, 1919. He attended Calcutta Boy's School and graduated with a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Rangoon. During World War II, Neville was Captain of Queen Alexandra's Third Gurkha Rifles regiment with the British Indian Army. He moved to England in 1948 and worked as a research chemist for Henley's. In 1951, Neville married Emily and in 1955, he moved his family to Canada and was hired by Dow Chemical in Sarnia. He started Valley Process Specialties in 1968 and sold it when he turned 75. Neville was a member of Central United Church, a docent and a strong supporter of the Judith and Norman Alix Art Gallery. He loved music and the opera, and was a fan of tennis, cricket and soccer. Neville loved to travel and tell stories about growing up in India. He had a positive outlook on life, and every day he said "I'm doing well, and the sun is always shining," as it was the day he passed. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 18, 2018 at SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 1576 London Line, Sarnia. Sympathy may be expressed through donations to Central United Church, the Judith and Norman Alix Art Gallery or a charity of your choice (cheques only at the funeral home please).
