Downtown Gallery Preparing For Landmark Exhibition

The Judith and Norman Alix Art Gallery in Sarnia’s downtown will be closed until September 1 as they prepare for the opening of a new First World War exhibit.
Staff and volunteers will be packing up current exhibits, constructing and painting walls, installing art, and fine tuning public programming.
Curator Lisa Daniels says some very impressive war paintings will be on display until January 7, 2018.
She says the majority of the work comes from the War Museum in Ottawa’s Beaverbrook collection.
“There are works from A.Y. Jackson, Fred Varley, David Milne, and Mable May,” says Daniels. “But, it’s also interesting because a lot of the works that will be on display weren’t actually done by official war artists. Some of them were done by soldiers in the trenches who would do little sketches in their books. So, we’re getting a really interesting view of what it was like in war time.”
Daniels says they’re also working with the Lambton Heritage Museum to feature some local war time art.
A public opening of “Witness: Canadian Art of the First World War” will be held on September 1 at 6pm. Admission is free.
