Look What's Happening FREE this April at Judith & Norman Alix Art Gallery

It's art for everyone this April at the Judith and Norman Alix Art Gallery in downtown Sarnia. Whether it's surprising Saturdays, Sunday afternoon hands-on family fun, or the quiet contemplation of artworks on exhibition there's always something FREE to see and do. And this Easter long-weekend your gallery is open, rain or shine.

Surprising Saturdays in April

Every Saturday promises something new and unexpected. Pop into the gallery studio anytime between 1:00 and 3:00pm for a surprising experience. Explore, create and learn in your own way at these drop-in sessions. You won't know what art adventure is in store until you walk through the studio's doors. All ages are welcome; children under 12 are to be accompanied by an adult.

Family Sundays

Proudly sponsored by Bluewater Power, every Sunday is Family Sunday. Different activities await every visit from 1:00 until 3:00pm. On Sunday April 5 it's time to fold and pack up 3D paper tents. Keep an eye on Sarnia before showing up because you'll be drawing images of your hometown city the way it is or the way you wish it might be. Then we'll show you how to create your own tent projection just like what you see in the exhibition, Setting: Land.

What makes your neighbourhood different or extra special? Sunday April 12 bring along your storyteller hat and get set to tell a picture story about where you live. For inspiration we'll take a look at the Inuit artists who share their community stories in the exhibition Two Views: Canada's North.

How can lines, shapes and different ways of applying paint be used to express creativity? On Sunday April 19, create your own abstract painting using big paint brushes and lots of bright colours on real canvas.

How can you make a GIANT drawing using a small piece of paper? On the last Sunday of the month, April 26, visitors will learn a trick or two using projectors and imaginations.

Two Views: Canada's North
Through to April 19, 2015
Organized by the Judith and Norman Alix Art Gallery, featuring work from the Gallery's permanent collection and that of the Macdonald Stewart Art Centre (Guelph), in Two Views: Canada's North, twelve rich oil sketches by A.Y. Jackson join a chorus of sixteen Inuit drawings, prints, and wall-hangings. Artists Pudlo Pudlat, Annie Pootoogook, Naomi Ityi and more, present a fertile exploration of place and landscape. By contrasting these two perspectives, we can all relate in different ways to our own personal connection to landscape and understanding of place. Click here to learn more.

Setting: Land
Through to May 3, 2015
Organized and circulated by the Thunder Bay Art Gallery, this exhibition has been generously supported by the Ontario Arts Council through the Aboriginal Curatorial Projects and Ontario Touring Programs. Setting: land is an exhibition that brings together works by four artists - Kevin Lee Burton (Winnipeg, Manitoba), Kaoru Ryan Klatt (Winnipeg, Manitoba), Kade Twist (Phoenix, Arizona), and Anna Tsouhlarakis (Washington, DC). Through their video and installation-based artworks each artist considers land as both a source of inspiration and a setting for enacting stories and experiences. Click here to learn more!

Jason Baerg: Returning
Through to May 3, 2015
Initiated by Strathcona County Art Gallery @ 501 with a national tour organized by the Mendel Art Gallery, this dynamic, multi-media exhibition features works created by Jason Baerg, a Cree Métis artist based in Toronto/New York. Works in this exhibition include a series of circular paintings which draw on Baerg's early training in abstraction combined with computer-generated elements, and a new installation of figurative-abstract paintings.
