This will be the final exhibit in its 'Share the Passion: Gifts of Art' series (Lambton Shield)
Works of art composed by the Group of Seven and their contemporaries, such as Tom Tomson, are coming to the Judith and Norman Alix Art Gallery in Sarnia.
“Heavy Hitters: The Group of 7 & Contemporaries”opens to the public Friday, July 7 at 6:00 p.m. and showcases a number of the community’s most adored paintings by the famous Group of Seven.
Paintings or drawings by almost every member of the group will be on display including the work of J.E.H. MacDonald, Arthur Lismer, Frederick Varley, Franklin Carmichael, A.Y. Jackson, and Lawren Harris. Some contemporaries to the Group of Seven featured exhibit include Norvel Morrisseau, A.J. Casson, Tom Tomson, Edwin Holgate, and LeMoine Fitzgerald.
“While the exhibition will be brimming with spectacular paintings by the Group of Seven, a special focus will be placed on two recently donated and restored paintings by Emily Carr”, said Sonya Blazek, assistant curator at the JNAAG. “These paintings on paper have undergone meticulous restoration in order to remove discoloration and reinvigorate the colours carefully selected by Carr.”
Jennifer Robertson, the conservator who worked on the paintings, will be at the JNAAG on Thursday, July 20 at 7:00 p.m. to share details of the conversion process.
This is the first time the two Carr paintings have been exhibited at the JNAAG. The exhibit opens with a special member’s reception from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m., July 7 and runs until August 6.
The exhibit is the final in a series dubbed “Share the Passion: Gifts of Art”, which highlights the numerous donors who have made the gallery possible.
