Sarnia, ON – The Judith & Norman Alix Art Gallery (JNAAG) invites the public to experience two captivating new exhibitions this spring: Rajni Perera Futures; and Storm Watch.
Toronto-based visionary Rajni Perera transports viewers into boldly imagined dystopian landscapes. As one of Canada's most innovative contemporary multimedia artists, Perera masterfully blends diverse influences—from Sri Lankan artistic traditions and Indian miniature painting to medieval armour and science fiction—creating powerful works that challenge conventions.
Her creations span painting, sculpture, and drawings, and tells stories about being a woman, moving to a new country, and how people might survive in a damaged world. This thought-provoking exhibition, organized and circulated by the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, showcases Perera's unique ability to reimagine our collective tomorrow.
As climate uncertainties intensify worldwide, "Storm Watch" presents a timely examination of nature's forces through artistic expression. This carefully curated selection from JNAAG's permanent collection features both historic and contemporary works interpreting extreme weather phenomena.
Visitors will discover powerful perspectives from renowned Canadian artists including Christopher Pratt, Rita Letendre, A.J. Casson, and David Blackwood, each offering unique artistic commentary on humanity's relationship with the nature’s most dramatic moments.
"These exhibitions invite visitors to consider both our potential futures and our evolving relationship with nature's power," says Sonya Blazek, Curator/Supervisor, JNAAG. "We're particularly excited to welcome Rajni Perera, whose work has garnered international acclaim for its innovative approach to visualizing possible futures.”
A special Members Reception will be held on First Friday, May 2, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., featuring an appearance by artist Rajni Perera. For membership information, contact Yesenia Samuel at 519-336-8127.
